Youths, 12, 'lasered helicopter'

The chopper was flying near Aberdeen Airport

Two 12-year-old boys are to be reported after a laser was shone at a helicopter flying near Aberdeen Airport.

The pilot of the Bristow helicopter reported the laser light being used in the Dyce area.

A Grampian Police spokesman said: "Luckily no-one was injured but it goes without saying the result could have been very different."

The incident happened at about 1900 BST on Thursday. The boys will be referred to the Children's Reporter.

'Strong beam'

The police spokesman said: "Many of these laser lights have a strong beam which can cause temporary blindness or more permanent injuries, even from a great distance.

"The beam can light up the cockpit making it difficult for the pilot to see the instrument panel.

''I would urge parents to be vigilant and confiscate any laser lights from your children. These lasers, which often take the form of a pen, serve no purpose other than to dazzle and distract."

He added: "Grampian Police take a very firm stance on this matter and I can assure you we will report anyone found using these lights to distract aircraft.''
