Police have appealed for witnesses to the robbery to get in touch

A hooded raider has made off with a "substantial" amount of money in a robbery at a general store in Dumfries.

The incident happened at about 2000 BST on Thursday at Lochfield Stores on the town's Hardthorn Road.

Police said a young man went into the shop and threatened a female assistant before taking money from the till.

He is about 5ft 10in tall, of medium build wearing a blue and white hooded top, blue jeans, dark shoes and had a scarf over his face.

Although the shop assistant was not injured in the attack, police said she was left shaken.

They want to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time and who may have seen the youth.

In particular, they would like to trace a female shopper who was in the premises when the robbery took place.
