New £6m Stirling bridge delayed

The new bridge in Stirling
The bridge will now be completed next year

The opening of a £6m bridge to link Stirling city centre with the new 40-acre Forthside waterfront development has been delayed.

The pedestrian bridge, which will stand 6m above the ground and span the city's train station, will now open some time next year.

The structure was due to be opened to the public next month.

Contractor Edmund Nuttall Ltd said the delay was down to the "complex" and "unique" nature of the bridge's design.

James Scobie, divisional director for the company said: "As the new structure is nearing completion, major components, including the main stays, are being stressed in a controlled process to introduce the required strength and rigidity.

"Given the complex and unique nature of the bridge design, this stressing process is taking longer than originally anticipated and has required adjustment to the structure's support systems."

Councillor Scott Farmer called the delay disappointing but added: "This iconic and unique structure will grace the skyline of Stirling for many years to come and while a delay is regrettable we must be patient and allow the contractor the time needed to complete the adjustments they have identified."

When complete, the bridge will be open 24 hours a day and include lifts for the disabled.

It was designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and engineered by Gifford, the team behind the Millennium Bridge in Gateshead.
