A Scottish fishing vessel which was drifting in rough waters in the Irish sea off Gwynedd has been towed to safety after a 12-hour rescue.

Two men on board, are safe and well, said Holyhead coastguard.

An RAF Valley rescue helicopter was called to help find the boat after a red flare and an electronic distress signal were set off.

A Turkish vessel passing by gave shelter to the boat in the night, to help them during the rough seas.

Lifeboat crews helped in the rescue and the boat has been towed back to Pwllheli.

Milford Haven, Holyhead and Belfast and Falmouth coastguard teams were also involved in the rescue which started at 0230 BST and ended at 1515 BST.

Gale force winds in the Irish Sea had left the boat drifting 16 miles off Bardsey Island off the Llyn peninsula.
