Fire families forced to stay away

House gutted in fire at Plas Madoc estate
One home was gutted in the blaze

Residents living in seven homes on an estate near Wrexham are being faced with a weekend away after a fire in a row of terraced council houses.

Police are treating the fire which broke out just after midnight on the Plas Madoc estate as suspicious.

The property where the fire started is completely gutted and the blaze spread to neighbouring roof spaces

The council has temporarily rehoused two tenants and said three more had made their own arrangements.

Some residents said they were unhappy at the standard of alternative accommodation being offered but the council stressed this was temporary homeless accommodation.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward in the strictest of confidence.

'Very dangerous'

Residents nearby said police had been knocking doors asking if people had seen anything suspicious, specifically anybody running from the scene.

Acting Inspector James Lee said police and fire officers were waiting for the houses to be made safe before the investigation could progress.

"As you can see behind me there the house has been virtually destroyed.

"The roof structure is very very dangerous and insecure at this point in time.

"We're working with the fire service and the local authority with regards to making the property safe so that we can enter and then commence a full forensic fire investigation jointly with the fire service."
