100 police stage dawn drugs raid

Drug dealers have been targeted in a series of raids by about 100 police officers in Newport, south Wales.

Officers and sniffer dogs entered eight properties in the Somerton area in an early morning operation.

Gwent Police said drugs had been discovered at one house, and a substantial amount of cash had also been recovered.

Officers said they were acting on concerns in the community that a drugs ring was operating in the area.

"We've received quite a large amount of intelligence from various sources regarding drug dealing activity on the Somerton estate," said Sgt David Morgan.

"The sources tended to indicate that one person was in control of a drugs ring in this area, and it was our determination to break this ring."

Police said the operation came after members of the local community raised growing concerns about drugs in the area.

"I think it clearly sends the message out that we take drug dealing seriously in this area," added Sgt Morgan.
