Lee Valley stadium plans unveiled

Sports Minister Richard Caborn and Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell at the launch of the London 2012 Olympic bid Plans for a state-of-art athletics complex in London have been unveiled.

The £16m Lee Valley Athletics Centre in Enfield will provide both indoor and outdoor facilities for elite athletes, schools and clubs in the region.

Scheduled to open in 2006, it will include the only indoor 200m six-lane track in the south and permanent seating for 500 both inside and out.

The cost of building the centre will be met by the Government, Sport England and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority.

Three-time Olympic champion Steve Backley said: "Athletes in the south east have been eagerly awaiting this kind of training facility in the London area.

"The training that can be undertaken in this type of indoor centre will undoubtedly help with the development of athletics in the region."

Sports Minister Richard Caborn added: "London has the chance to underline its position as one of the world's leading cities for sport if we win the 2012 bid.

"The construction of the Lee Valley Athletics Centre is another example of how seriously we want that."
